Easter Survival Guide
Easter can be a tricky time for the chocoholics among us.
My advice? Enjoy it…it’s once a year, which leads me on to:
Over restriction doesn’t work.
Why?
It is not sustainable or realistic.
Foods that we have labelled “bad” such as pizza, chocolate, chips etc, could instead be regarded as “special” foods.
I love pizza, if I ate it every day, it would no longer be special, so I look forward to having it sometimes and enjoying it guilt free. One pizza will not derail the rest of my good work.
If we deny ourselves completely (over restrict), then we can end up feeling deprived, and soon as a bad day hits, we are more at risk of over consuming what we have been missing.
This in turn can make you feel guilty (negative emotion), which can lead to self-sabotage “this is too hard”, I’ve ruined it now, so I’ll keep going” - all negative emotions which are linked to that binge / restrict cycle so many of us get stuck in.
If we flip the self-talk to positive – “I love chocolate and I’m going to enjoy some this easter because it’s a special occasion”, then guilt doesn’t set in.

Give yourself permission to enjoy these occasions as having special foods sometimes, will not derail progress, over restriction, then binging, and self sabotage is what derails progress.
Some people feel they have an uncontrollable sweet tooth, there are plenty of ways to tackle this, firstly recognise that sugar isn’t an addiction, we don’t suffer withdrawal from it, we don’t pay back street prices for it and we don’t carry it around at all times in case we can’t get access to it!
Cravings are waves, we can ride them, and they pass – at worst, they feel annoying, most of us can deal with feeling annoyed for a few minutes.
A craving for sweet things can also be a sign you are not eating enough, or not eating the right kind of foods to sustain your energy levels, this is something I help plenty of clients with.
Last Easter tip – if you feel like you are at risk of consuming too much (because once you start you can’t stop), don’t buy heaps! Ask your friends / family / partner to buy you a smaller egg if they usually go all out, and if you have kids – they do not need a mountain of eggs! Lots of parents are making the switch now to chocolate free Easter gifts like books and Easter PJ’s.
If you do end up with lots left over – give it away / or place it in a tub labelled “KIDS” to remind yourself, it’s not yours
